Barbara ScheffterBarbara Schefter

Barbara Scheffter earned a Bachelors Degree in English and a Masters Degree in Education from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania.  While at Allegheny, she pursued a childhood love of music as a member of the Allegheny College Choir, an excellent touring choir that sang mostly a cappella music. As a member of the choir, she sang under the direction of Randall Thompson and performed at the National Cathedral, The Riverside Church at Columbia University, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Chapel in Berlin.

Upon graduation, Barbara served as a middle school English teacher in Ohio and a Public Information Specialist at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, each for four years, before entering the field of music as a vocation.  She has served as a church musician for over 25 years, building and leading children’s and adult vocal choirs and handbell ensembles in South Carolina and Maryland. When her youngest child went to college,  she returned to school herself. After enjoying the first two years of coursework in the Music Department at FCC, she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis in music education at UMBC, graduating summa cum laude.

She is currently pursuing two more musical dream; composing and teaching on the college level. This past August two of her compositions were accepted for publication by Ball Church Music Publications LLC, a new publishing firm based in Hagerstown, MD.  Also in August Barbara began teaching Music Fundamentals at FCC and is very much enjoying being in the classroom again.
