Recipients Announced for 2018 FCC President’s Business Appreciation Awards
04/23/2018
President Elizabeth Burmaster has announced the 2018 recipients of the Frederick Community College President’s Business Appreciation Awards. These annual awards recognize business and non-profit partners for their commitment, contributions, and support of the College mission and its students.

“Strong business partnerships increase student success and opportunity, inform our curriculum, and help us meet industry needs,” President Burmaster said. “We are grateful to these award recipients for recognizing the power of higher education and lending their expertise and time to benefit our students and community.”

The four award recipients will be officially recognized at the President’s Business Appreciation Awards Breakfast on Monday, May 7 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Student Center. The Frederick County business community is invited to attend this event. To register for the event, visit www.fccbusinessawards2018.eventbrite.com.

The recipients this year are:

Business Partner of the Year – Glade Valley Center

The Glade Valley Center has been a longtime supporter of the FCC Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (CNA/GNA) Program. Each semester, the center, which specializes in rehabilitation services, hosts an average of 24 CNA students. During their clinical at Glade Valley, students gain the 45 hours of hands-on experience needed to complete their program. Students are introduced to a variety of different care units at the center including the dementia and rehab units. They record clinical measurements and assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including personal care, bathing, meals, and ambulation. During their time at Glade Valley, students also learn of job opportunities at the center, where numerous graduates are employed, as well as elsewhere in the CNA/GNA field.

Non-Profit Partner of the Year – YMCA of Frederick County

In addition to serving the Frederick community with its many services and programs, the YMCA of Frederick County has shown its commitment to employee development by partnering with FCC for more than 10 years to provide on-site childcare licensing training courses to its staff. Instead of making employees spend their own time and money on the required 90 hours of training, the YMCA offers the training during the work day at no cost. Through this commitment, the YMCA has been a key contributor to the childcare career pathway in Frederick County by offering excellent entry-level employment and training opportunities. Many students who complete the on-site training at the YMCA offered by FCC have gone on to enroll in FCC credit programs as a part of their continued career training.

Business Donor of the Year – Ryan Yu, President, Daly Computers

Ryan Yu is being recognized for his contribution to the FCC Foundation Student Success Funds. Yu is the President of Daly Computers, which has offered IT services to education and government clients for more than 30 years. The Student Success Funds were initiated in 2015 by President Elizabeth Burmaster to help support FCC students facing a financial crisis and in danger of dropping out. These funds can help cover the costs of tuition, books, car repairs, public transit fees, childcare, and other expenses. Since its inception, nearly 300 students have benefited from Student Success Funds.

Business Leader of the Year - Mina Izadjoo, Ph.D.

Dr. Mina Izadjoo, President and Chief Science Officer of Integrated Pharma Services (IPS), has supported the FCC Bioprocessing Technology Program and its students in many ways. She has volunteered her time and resources to provide internship opportunities to students in a field where real-world experience is critical. Thanks to Dr. Izadjoo, bioprocessing technology students have learned innovative skills and have acquired on-the-job training in a fully equipped lab while still in college. She has served as a mentor to students, ensuring young scientists have the skills and support to succeed in the biotech workforce. Under Dr. Izadjoo’s direction, IPS has also served as a site for student research activities that promote the areas of science and biotechnology.
