Parents and Families

How can you help your student with their major and career planning? We know you want the best for them in their college experience and their career decision making process, so we have pulled together a few helpful tips.

Things you can do to encourage your student:

Major and Career Exploration

  • Begin the process of identifying interests through Career Coach that will link to academic majors and careers.
  • Expand the career assessment process by identifying values, skills, and personality and then explore what careers can be pursued through the study of various majors using Focus2.
  • Encourage a meeting with a Career Advisor in J-201 that will facilitate in-depth major and career exploration.
  • Research careers through resources such as www.onetonline.org to learn about the employment outlook, skills needed for various careers, educational requirements, and salaries by region. After researching careers through online resources, we encourage dialogue with professionals in the field through informational interviews and job shadowing.
  • Suggest that your student get to know our faculty and instructors. Many of them have worked directly in their fields of academic expertise.

Acquiring Experience

  • Leadership experience can be acquired through clubs and organizations, as well as service-learning. Employers look for this type of experience on student resumes.
  • It is never too early to begin thinking about internships. Students can begin exploring internships through College Central Network.
  • For students enrolled in Career Programs, suggest a conversation with the Internship Coordinator.

Transfer Planning and Advising

  • If your student is planning to pursue a 4-year degree after attending FCC, it is a great idea to meet with the Transfer Advisor in Counseling & Advising and take advantage of the resources in J-201. Representatives from many colleges and universities visit FCC throughout the year to talk to students about their academic programs and how to transfer.
  • FCC also hosts a Transfer Fair in the fall and spring semesters.

Job Search Assistance

  • Career Advisors can assist students with all aspects of the job search for part-time jobs, internships, and full-time jobs. Assistance may include resume development, preparing for interviews, networking assistance, and developing a professional online presence.
  • Students can search for employment and internship opportunities, as well as find helpful resources for the job search on College Central Network.
  • Encourage your student to network with employers who visit FCC throughout the year for recruiting and networking events. These events can be found on the FCC Calendar of Events or the Career Services website.
  • Additional resources can be found on the FCC Library Research Guide titled “Careers and Jobs: Explore Careers.”
