Dedication Ceremony for Bess and Frank Gladhill Learning Commons to Take Place on Sunday
06/22/2017
Frederick Community College is holding a dedication ceremony for the newly named Bess and Frank Gladhill Learning Commons at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25.

The naming of the Learning Commons recognizes a gift from the Gladhills, which will establish the Bess and Frank Gladhill Scholars Fund. This fund will provide one-year scholarships, up to $6,400 each per year, for students with financial need. The scholarships, which will be offered starting in the fall, can be used for tuition, fees, books, internships, instructional materials, childcare, or other student support.

“We are grateful to Bess for her decision to honor her husband, Frank, with this naming of our Learning Commons,” FCC President Elizabeth Burmaster said. “We thank the entire Gladhill family for believing in the power of higher education and seeing the same potential in our students as we do. Their significant support will help many deserving students work toward their academic and career goals.”

The Gladhills have served as volunteers with numerous agribusiness, local government, and nonprofit organizations in the community. Bess and Frank Gladhill are previous recipients of the Frederick Community College Foundation Community Eagle Award, given annually to recognize unique and innovative support for FCC students and programs.

The proposal to name the Learning Commons was approved by the FCC Board of Trustees at its April meeting.

The dedication ceremony will take place in the Bess and Frank Gladhill Learning Commons, located on the second floor of Linganore Hall. President Burmaster will speak at the event and County Executive Jan Gardner and County Council President Bud Otis will present Bess Gladhill with a certificate of appreciation. The ceremony will include a ribbon cutting and light refreshments. It is open to the public and will be attended by Bess Gladhill and her three daughters, as well as FCC Trustees, members of the FCC Foundation Board, and FCC senior leadership.
