Preparing for your advising appointment

Academic advising is available to all FCC students who pursue a degree or certificate program. Advisors have specialized knowledge of courses and programs and are the best source of information regarding how to complete your degree requirements. If you plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, you are especially encouraged to meet with an advisor regularly to make sure the courses you take at FCC will transfer to your intended four-year college.

To get the most out of your advising session, here's our checklist to help you prepare:

•   Meet with your advisor at least once each semester, typically PRIOR to April registration for summer and fall semesters, and PRIOR to November registration for JTerm and spring semester. This guarantees the best selection of courses.
•   Review your "My Degree Plan" online to see what requirements are "unsatisfied" and plan to focus on them during your appointment.
•   Ask questions about courses, class meeting times, transferability of courses and drop/add dates.
•   Tell your advisor if you are struggling in classes, or if you don't understand how your grades, including withdrawals, affect your GPA and academic standing, or if you are considering exploring other majors.
•   Request your advisor to refer you to other College faculty, staff and services if needed (tutoring, mentoring, counseling, student clubs and organizations).
Not sure who your advisor is? Check the Advisor Contact List . Your advisor is based upon your major or your participation in a specific program (Adult Services, Multicultural Student Services, Veteran and Military Services, or Services for Students with Disabilities).
