Stephen G. Slater, an attorney, civic leader, military veteran, and lifelong resident
of Frederick County, has been appointed to the Frederick Community College (FCC) Board
of Trustees by Maryland Governor Wes Moore and will serve through July 2029.
Slater and his entire family have close connections to FCC: He, his wife Alexis and
their two adult children have all taken classes at the College, and he is a former
FCC adjunct professor in the political science program. Both his father Thomas and
brother Mark also served as adjunct faculty in the history and sociology departments,
respectively. And his mother Anne was not only a full-time faculty member of the FCC
English department for more than 30 years, but she also launched the College’s now-renowned
Honors Program, and a student award and scholarship were created in her name upon
her passing in 2024.
“My mother’s influence was a big part of our family’s life, and it helped motivate
my interest in the FCC Board,” said Slater. “I want to help ensure that the College
remains a strong and important fixture in the community for years to come.”
Slater brings decades of experience in government, law, military service, and the
arts and faith communities to the Board. A veteran of the U.S. Navy and Maryland Army
National Guard, Slater earned a B.A. degree in Government and Politics at the University
of Maryland in College Park and his Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University
in Washington, D.C. He has practiced law in Frederick city for more than 20 years,
most of it in with his father, primarily representing disabled individuals before
the Social Security Administration.
Active in local political and civic affairs for many years, Slater has chaired the
Frederick County Charter Review Commission and served on the boards of the Bishop
Claggett Center in Buckeystown and the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick.
